Success
With Keyboarding™ is a two week program. Taught every day, there
is a morning introduction session, an afternoon directed practice, and
nightly homework. With directed lessons, the teacher collects and assigns
homework, reviews the previous lesson, and then introduces a new lesson
in 20-30 minute sessions. Directed
Practice
takes place in a learning center using AlphaSmarts, keyboards, and lab
practice. Homework can be done in a library, open labs, using an AlphaSmart
device, or on any non-working keyboard. The following are stressed during
the two week SWK™ program.
- Sequence
- teaches the order of the keys
- Memory
- Covering the "home row" keys with moleskin, repeat each
lesson three times correctly,
repeat key sequence out loud, spaced repetition (lessons and homework)
morning, afternoon, and evening. The delete key is NOT used; it interferes
with memory. Kinesthetic feedback
for short and long term memory. And, the very structure of
the program increases memory.
- Multi-sensory
- Students "see" the keyboard, "hear" the lesson
as they repeat it out loud, and "feel" the keyboard because
of the moleskin coverings.
- Study
Skills - repetition, using chunks of information for each
lesson presented in "bite-size" pieces, and Mnemonics
- Discovery
Learning - students discover that they have control over
how quickly learning to keyboard happens, they link to old learning
habits, learn in ABC order, and learn to anticipate what is coming
next
- Stress
Techniques - by stressing the correct typing techniques in
elementary school, high school students are much better keyboarders,
improving in speed and accuracy
- Motivation
- the computer itself becomes the motivation as students see actual
progress in their skills. These skills will carry them successfully
through school to the workplace where they can apply them to "real
world" work. They will feel successful, and therefore, will not
feel the need to struggle in a power play situation.
- Time
on Task - no more arguing about practicing. Students have
fun with this program with it's quick introduction, active learning
techniques, and fast pace. They will learn naturally.
- Developmental
Needs - students must have the motor control of at least
an average 3rd grader. If keyboarding instruction is started before
the 6th grade it becomes less important to stress wrist position,
fingers always remaining on the "home" keys, and feet remaining
flat on the floor. And, it is okay to glance at the keyboard
while practicing until motor control is at or beyond a 6th grade level.
Keyboarding accesses a different part of the brain, therefore it positively
effects learning in all other areas, and enhances the educational
experience for students.
