Changing a Paradigm

A paradigm is a pattern. We must start to change the pattern of teaching keyboarding skills to students only after they are in the upper grades, such as high school. With the introduction of computers in elementary schools, we can no longer wait until high school to provide keyboarding skills to students.

Keyboarding skills prepare our young students for the world we live in today; the world of technology, and it is an important skill to be learned. Students cannot expect to learn the use of computers without the required preparation, which begins with keyboarding.

What are the student's needs?

With the introduction of computers into the elementary school, serious attention needs to be given to the need for keyboarding instruction. Such instruction would seem to be the first step in developing "computer literacy." Learning, 1986

Exposure to computers now begins in preschool, and today high school teachers are finding the students coming to them without the necessary keyboarding skills. Access to computers in the classroom is generally limited, and the average students keyboarding skills are much too slow to allow adequate time for composing their assignments, much less to allow computer time for the other students in class.
